Creative Statement

Judi Bommarito is a Detroit based photographer and an adjunct instructor at the College for Creative Studies, where she also received her BFA with honors. She is a mentor for Focus HOPE: Focus on the Mission which is an annual diversity and leadership program that incorporates the art of photography and challenges tri-county high school students to address the role of multiculturalism in society and their own lives. She is also a lead mentor for the Focus:HOPE Excel after school photography program.
Judi has been the recipient of numerous awards including Best of Show at the St. Lawrence Gallery, First Place at the Historical Scarab Club in Detroit, Third Place at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts - Celebrate Michigan Artists Photo Exhibition. Honorable Mention at the Polaroid International Competition, to name a few.
Judi has created the design layout and photography of numerous music CD’s, her most recent, “Open Domain.” Her photo emulsion collage is included in Kathleen Thormond Carr’s book “Photo Manipulations.”
Judi is immersed in a documentary series titled, “The SPACE Between The Cracks.” Three images from the series have recently received grand prize and juror selection recognition, by juror Mary Ellen Mark, in the PWP International Competition. Judi is a featured artist in IMPRINTS summer magazine. She was also invited to participate in a blog series called 30 by 30, it features thirty women photographers and the women photographers who inspired them.
Judi is also immersed in a conceptual documentary series titled “Power Up The Girl.” The series is intended to empower our young girls and hold them accountable for the direction of their future.
